:: Elvis, The King Of What??
Posted on Thursday, August 15, 2002 @ 14:15:38 EDT
Entertainment

Marco writes: "I'm sure you all know about this already but here's a great article running on the Guardian Unlimited website about Elvis Presley and how he, more than any other performer, epitomises the theft of the music and dance of black people. Here's an excerpt of the article.

"As another celebration of a dead white hero winds up, in this hallowed Week of Elvis, shouldn't the entertainment industry hold its own truth and reconciliation commission?

It needn't be a vehicle for retribution, just somewhere where tales of white appropriation of black culture, not to mention outright theft, can finally be laid to rest. Following Michael Jackson's recent outburst accusing Sony chief, Tony Mottola, of racism, perhaps he could officiate and champion all black musicians who have been ripped off by nasty white music business CEOs.
"

You can read the rest of the article here and please impart your own views on the so ever called "the king of Rock-n-Roll"."

Pierre-Max writes: "I did all my primary and most of my secondary school in Haiti. Primary and secondary are the equivalent of elementary, middle ... high school. The subject that I enjoyed the most was taught in primary school 7eme if I remember, and it was Haitian History. I used to be so proud to memorize pages after pages of our history. I couldnt wait to get to the parts where we fought battles and organized insurrections. I had a vivid imagination and I would recreate the scenes in my mind, where our slave ancestors rallied and defeated the French army.

I was so proud to be a citizen of the first black nation. I was proud to have ancestors like Toussaint L'Ouverture, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, Henri Christophe, Capois La Mort. I still remember parts of " La Bataille de Vertieres". Vivre libre ou mourir (Liberty or death), we said that one day and we defeated the greatest army of the time. I visited "la Citadelle La Ferriere" three years ago, and I thought to myself, this is something they'll never take from us, we were the first."

TheBlackKnight writes: "Most Canadians forget that the first waves of Haitians that came to Canada were professionals who made a great impact on the country evolution, especially in Quebec, in fields such as healthcare and education.
Later, during the late 70s, if you said that you were from Haiti; you were automatically labeled as a taxi driver or a welfare recipient.

The late 80s brought the gang phenomenon, and Haitians were perceived as thugs, killers and of course Black Magic practioners.

Are those days gone? Is the new generation of Haitian-canadians changing that negative perception?

I have seen a lot of changes throughout the years, but I guess we still have a long way to go."

:: News: When You Thought You Knew Where You Live.

United States

Marco writes: "Well think again because precision mapping is raising new questions about land borders and few people are finding out that they don't live where they thought. Prior the arrivals of GPS (Global Positioning System), state, county and city borders were part law, part measurement, and part guesswork. Now, thanks to the new technology they're able to go back and discover where actual borders should be, and it's making many people unhappy. For example, some families in Rhode Island are finding out they may actually live in Connecticut and each state, county and city wants as much land as possible, because it means more tax revenues for them. So if you live near the border of any state, you may soon find you are in for a new address without moving and have to start dealing with new sets of laws and taxes. Read more about it here."

:: Humor: Men's Rules!
Posted on Thursday, August 01, 2002 @ 18:20:58 EDT
Sex & Romance

Marco writes: "We always hear "the rules" from the female side. Now here are the rules from the male side. These are our rules! Please note these are all numbered "1" ON PURPOSE! Print this out and pass to your partner for a greater understanding:

1. Learn to work the toilet seat. You're a big girl. If it's up, put it down. We need it up, you need it down. You don't hear us bitching about you leaving it down.

1. Birthdays, Valentines, and Anniversaries are not quests to see if we can find the perfect present yet again!

1. Sometimes we are not thinking about you. Live with it.

1. Don't cut your hair. Ever. Long hair is always more attractive than short hair. One of the big reasons guys fear getting married is that married women always cut their hair, and by then you're stuck with her.

1. Crying is blackmail.

1. Ask for what you want. Let us be clear on this one: Subtle hints do not work! Strong hints do not work! Obvious hints do not work! Just say it!

1. We don't remember dates. Mark birthdays and anniversaries on a calendar. Remind us frequently beforehand. "
