:: The Duvalier & The Lavalas: A Comparison
|
|
Posted on Sunday, December 07, 2003 @ 15:42:14 EST
Panoramix writes: "Francois Duvalier is depicted nowadays as an evil man and they even blame Haiti's current political and economic crisis on the 29 years of rule of the Duvalier dynasty. But they don't mention that Francois Duvalier was two times more popular than Jean Bertrand Aristide in 1957. He had the support of the Haitian intellectuals as well as the masses. He based his campaign on Black pride, before him most the important government positions were occupied by mulattoes. All the higher officers in the Haitian military were mulattoes, and to protect himself from a coup, he favored the promotion of blacks in the Haitian military producing Prosper Avril, and other well known political figures.
One of the first thing he did was to change the Flag, he described the Blue and Red Flag as representing only the mulattoes and the sky of Haiti (Blue Top, Red Bottom), he changed it to Black and Red to represent the union of the blacks and the mulattoes (in vertical, Black closer to the pole and Red at the end). Most of what was built by Duvalier (Except for the Airport) was destroyed; one accomplishment that we will not lose is that he helped level the course between blacks and mulattoes in Haiti."

PsykhoPW3000 writes: "The number increase may seem small but to Blacks in Broward County, Florida; this is the first step in many. The official census taken on the 20th day of school shows that black students now account for 36 percent of the districts total 271, 339 students. White students account for 35 percent. Last year Whites made up 37.2 percent while Blacks made up 35 percent. A merely one percent increase, you say? True but a change nonetheless!
Officials say these results from the increasing numbers of Caribbean families moving into the area and the exit and dropping out of White students.
Fall's enrollment count are as follows :"

PsykhoPW3000 writes: "When I first heard this story I didn't really think much of it.
Gregory Hines...
Mmmmm...
I couldn't quite get the name. Nope...I couldn't picture who that was until I saw the news. Gregory Hines! Oh yes now I know....(sudden sadness)....Damn....first Barry White now you....
The man was not only a legendary dancer but also an award-winning singer and actor. Mr. Hines passed away Saturday (August 9, 2003) after his battle with cancer was lost.
Though he's most known for his films and TV work, Mr. Hines originally came into fame dancing with his brother and father in the group "Hines, Hines and Father." He and his brother, Maurice, later went on to international fame with their moves in the musical revue "Eubie." Soon after, there was an argument that resulted in the two brothers not speaking for many years."

TheBlackKnight writes: "People kill in the name of GOD, because they think they are doing it in the name of LOVE, therefore showing their lack of WISDOM.
GOD in his infinite WISDOM created life, than governs it with LOVE. Anyone would agree that love has it own rules that must be followed if one is to enjoy the benefits.
Cultivating love requires WISDOM.
Lets take a look at some of the things that require WISDOM. "

Rastarrhhr writes: " To many individuals, living deep is a way of life by which one makes full use of his or her time. In my opinion, living deep depends on the goals and standards by which an individual lives by. By living deep, one is truly satisfied with him or herself and is also satisfied with the amount of joy and happiness he or she has in the heart.
To me, for one to live deep, he or she has to live a full life. By living a full life, he has to make good use of his time. Procrastination is the thief of time. Therefore one has to plan their life ahead of time and make sure they follow their plan. Also, some people get caught up in life. They get caught up in paying bills and other life activities. Making full use of ones time doesnt mean that one has to be always busy physically. One can make use of his or her time mentally by thinking things through so that he or she wouldnt get caught up in things like bill payments. Thinking things through also cuts down on the mistakes one makes in life, and therefore makes room for other things to do. Living a full life doesnt necessarily mean that one has to enjoy all the time. There will be some sad times in life when one will not be joyful. Therefore one has to be prepared to face life and its challenges both mentally, physically, spiritually and intellectually."

:: Why Are We Afraid Of The Dark...
|
|
Posted on Monday, July 14, 2003 @ 18:30:47 EDT
Theblackknight writes: "Do you ever wonder why we are born with the fear of darkness? Is it genetic?
When the soul, millennium ago, left the immaterial world, the world of light to enter the uncertainty of life, did it experience fear for the first time?
I cant imagine how a being who was free from the boundary of life, roaming the universe, bounding with God would feel when all of a sudden it found itself imprisoned in the flesh, losing its capacity to know, experience, and embrace eternity.
I think the awe of fear would be carried by that being for a long while after birth, even beyond, until that being is able to comprehend the concept of limitation and remember that light dispel darkness, and that darkness is only the absence of light."

:: Opinion: The World Can Be A Sad Place

HaitianPrince06 writes: "The world appears to many as a place of enjoyment, relaxation, and achievements. Different people have different opinions about it, but I had not come to the realization, that the world can be a sad place for some people. It was not too long ago, when I decided to take a walk down my new neighborhood. Being it, the 2nd day at my dad's new house, which is situated somewhere in Oklahoma City, I was unfamiliar with the surroundings. At first, I was amazed to see no one on streets of my neighborhood after walking about a quarter of a mile. Then I decided to go a little bit farther. As I walked about another block, I finally came across a couple whom I greeted cheerfully. They greeted me back with a smile and carried on with their walk. Suddenly, I had a feeling that my neighbors would be friendly even though the couple I met were probably not living that close to where I lived. "
